Ropes Yoga

Ropes anchored to the wall take your weight, so you can hang, stretch, and hold poses that are hard to reach on the floor. Most people walk out taller.

WHAT THE ROPES DO

Think of the ropes as an extra pair of hands. They hold you where you need holding, so your body can do the rest.

  • Take your weight, so you can attend to the pose instead of bracing against it
  • Give the spine gentle traction, which is why backs feel so good afterward
  • Make hanging upside down safe and simple, even on your first day.  (Or take a few classes and work your way into to it.)
  • Let you stay in a pose longer, so it can teach you something
  • Bring back familiar poses with a freedom you didn’t know they had

”I was hesitant at first to sign up for ropes. It was intriguing, though, so I did it, and I'm so glad. There was no reason to be concerned about age or minor aches. The ropes and props took the balance out of the equation, and using the wall brought such freedom to familiar poses that I could hold them longer and better. The whole class was fun, and such a confidence builder. Every rope space was filled, and I heard nothing but happy comments as we left.

WHERE THE ROPES COME FROM

Rope work has a long history in yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar developed the modern rope wall and called the practice Yoga Kurunta, and Geeta Iyengar wrote that it gives "agility, lightness of the body, speed in movements and alertness in the brain." The idea is simple: ropes fixed to the wall support and extend the body, so poses that take years to reach on the floor can be felt right away. Our teachers have studied this work in the Iyengar tradition, and every rope class is taught by a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher.

GOOD FOR PEOPLE WHO THINK YOGA ISN'T FOR THEM

  • Stiff from sitting all day? The ropes helps you stretch in ways that are difficult to reach on your own.
  • Worried about balance? The wall has you.
  • Achy back? Gentle traction is what most people come back for.
  • Never done yoga? The ropes make hard poses simple and safe.
  • Experienced but stuck? Familiar poses, new depth.

The ropes are one tool among many. In our classes you'll also do standing poses, seated work, backbends, and the full range of Iyengar Yoga.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROPES

No. The ropes take your weight, which is the whole point. Most people find poses easier on the ropes than on the floor.

Yes, with a teacher. You’re held at the hips by a rope, your head is free, and you come down whenever you like. Many students say it’s the best part.   We also use the ropes for standing poses, seated postures and back extensions.

Hanging from the ropes gives the spine gentle traction, and most students feel relief right away. If you have a back condition, tell your teacher before class so they can set you up well.

Yes. Ropes Yoga is open to any level. If you’d like a gentler first step, start with Foundations, where you’ll meet the ropes in smaller doses.

Fitted clothes that let you move. Leggings and a short-sleeve top, with a long sleeve to layer, work well.
