Getting Started

Everything you need to know before your first class, so you can walk in already comfortable.

FIRST, PICK A CLASS

If you are new to yoga, or new to Iyengar Yoga, start with Foundations. We introduce the basic postures at a pace conducive to learning something new, and everyone in the room is learning alongside you. If you are feeling the effects of aging and want a class that takes that into account, Foundations 55+ is the place. Active and ready to dive in? You are welcome in Intermediate. Not sure? Book a free orientation and we'll place you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Classes run 60 to 90 minutes. You'll be taught how to do each pose, not just shown it, with clear instruction and hands-on adjustments when they help. We hold poses long enough for the body to learn, use props so every pose is accessible, and finish with a few minutes of rest so you leave refreshed. Expect to work hard and to be surprised by how good you feel afterward.

WHAT TO WEAR

Fitted clothes that let you move: leggings and a short-sleeve top, with a long sleeve to layer. Bare feet in the studio.

WHAT TO BRING

Nothing. Mats, blocks, belts, blankets, bolsters, chairs, and wall ropes are all provided. Water is welcome. Please leave phones and shoes in the entryway.

BEFORE CLASS

Arrive ten minutes early for your first visit so you can settle in and let your teacher know about any injuries or conditions. Doors open ten minutes before class. Practice on an empty stomach if you can, with your last meal two hours or more before.

FINDING US

1155 Westminster Street, Suite 301, Providence, RI 02909. We're on the third floor of the mill building on the West Side. We have a parking lot along with street parking. When you arrive, you’ll see instructions on how to use our call box. Studio phone: (401) 461-6665.

PRACTICING ONLINE

Most classes run live online at the same time as the studio class. You'll need a space about the size of a mat with a clear wall, a few firm blankets, a belt or strap, and something sturdy to sit on. Log in five minutes early, set your camera so your teacher can see your whole body, and keep your microphone on so you can ask questions. You’ll receive a zoom link 1 hour before the class and a 2 day recording to use after!

AFTER YOUR FIRST CLASS

Come back within the week. The second class is where it starts to make sense. Your three-week pass covers every class on the schedule, so try a few and see where you fit. When the pass ends, choose a membership, a 10-class pack, or drop in as you like. If cost is a barrier, check out our sliding scale on our pricing page.
