Foundations: Where Your Practice Begins

Most people who come to their first yoga class carry a version of the same quiet worry: that everyone else will already know what to do, that their body is too stiff or too inflexible, that they have waited too long to start. We hear this all the time. And what we tell people is that those worries are exactly what our Foundations class is designed for.

We start from the beginning. Not from where we think you should be, but from where you actually are. The first things we teach are the foundational standing postures — the poses you will return to for as long as you practice — along with basic seated work and forward extensions. Every class closes with restorative postures that help the nervous system settle and send you back into your day feeling more at ease than when you arrived.

Props are part of the practice from day one. Blocks, straps, blankets, and chairs are not crutches — they are tools that let the posture reach the part of your body that actually needs it. A well-placed block can change everything. We show you how to use them and why, so you understand what you are doing rather than just following along.

Classes are small. Your teacher will see you — not just the room. You will receive specific instruction, not generic cueing. And the community you will find here is one of the things our students mention most often: curious, warm, unpretentious people who show up regularly and are glad when you do too.

One more thing worth knowing: Iyengar yoga is a strong practice. The way we sequence classes and hold postures generates real change in the body — and that requires real effort. Many students notice genuine difference after a couple of months. If you are coming to build strength and stability, this is exactly the right place. We will ask you to do the optimal amount — not the maximum you can do. That distinction matters, and your teacher will help you find it.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Yes. Foundations classes are designed from the ground up for people with no prior experience. We explain what we are doing and why, the pace is deliberate, and the class is small enough that your teacher can see you individually.

That experience usually happens in a class not designed for beginners. In our Foundations class, everyone is learning the same material. The culture here is genuinely welcoming.

No. Flexibility is a result of practice, not a requirement for it. Props fill the gap between where your body is and where the posture needs to go. You begin exactly where you are.

Comfortable clothing that allows you to move. We provide all props. Just bring yourself.

Twice a week is a good starting point. Consistency matters more than frequency — two steady classes a week will show you more than five scattered ones.
